Truncated Dodecahedron all wood model.

The Truncated Dodecahedron is one of the 13 Archimedean Solids.  It has 12 decagons, 20  triangles, 60 vertices and 90 pieces of wood. Each piece is mitered so that they lay on an imaginary plane that passes through the center point.

This was a popular geometric piece during the 1950s – 60s Atomic Age, and was common to see as a hanging light fixture or a table top sculpture.

I make these in pine, then wood stained in fruitwood (light, shown), walnut (dark), cherry (red), or ebony (black). Each piece is signed, then sealed in clear polyurethane.

9″ or 12″ tall

All wood Rhombicubotahedron Model

The Rhombicubotahedron is one of the 13 Archimedian Solids. This has 18 squares, 8 triangles, 24 vertices, and 48 pieces of wood. Each of the pieces are compound mitered so each is on an imaginary plane that passes through the center point.

I make these in pine, then wood stained in fruitwood (light, shown), walnut (dark), cherry (red), or ebony (black). Each piece is signed, then sealed in clear polyurethane.

9″ or 12″ tall

“Truncated Tetrahedron” wood model

This is an all wood Truncated Tetrahedron, one of the 13 “Archimedes Solids” in polyhedra study.
It’s basically a regular tetrahedron with the 4 tips clipped off evenly so that 4 large hexagons and 4 smaller triangles remain (18 pieces of wood total). I can make these in a cherry (red) walnut (brown) ebony (black) wood stain, or just a clear polyurethane coat (as shown). 9″ or 12″ height.

“Truncated Octahedron” wood model

Wood Truncated Octahedron model, one of the 13 Archimedes Solids

It has 8 hexagons, 6 squares, 24 vertices, 36 pieces of wood, each compound mitered tword the imaginary center point. I make them 9″ or 12″ tall & wood stained in cherrywood, walnut, ebony, or just a clear polyurethane on wood (shown). The lightest are best for classroom, because they show cross shadows on the back pieces batter than darker stain.

“Borromean Rings” classroom model

The Borromean Rings are a classic math paradox. Not exactly a puzzle, (nothing actually comes apart), but as a model this is a nice tangable way to show students how the Borromean Rings are a type of ‘Gordian Knot’

Each of the 3 rings are closed circles and no 2 rings are actually linked together, yet as 3 rings they cannot come apart! If any one ring was broken, the other two would simply pull away from each other.

They lay down naturally in this kind of rosetta shape when you put them down, which is kinda cool. I make these 9″ or 12″ on the longest axis and very loose fitting. They are wood stained in cherry, walnut, and just clear coat polyurethane on the third to tell them apart (If you prefer all 3 rings the same as a decor piece, just ask).

Golden Ratio “Phi” Hexahedron

This is a 3 dimensional wood model of a rectangular hexahedron made to the proportions of the ‘Golden Ratio’ (phi). Nice little bookshelf or classroom lecture piece.

It’s either 9″ or 12″ on the longest axis with the corresponding pieces in very close fractional proportions to phi (its a conversation model, not for precision machinist work!). The ‘Golden Ratio’ is represented in black twice on this piece, the small to medium on the left, the medium to large on the right. I can make this in cherry wood or walnut wood stain (along with the black), or just clear coat polyurethane along with black as shown here.

A Cube of 8 Tetrahedron

A Cube of 8 TetrahedronTechnically its the same math as a cuboctahedron (8 triangles, 6 squares) but I made 8 tetrahedron in place of the triangles. This is symmetrical on all 6 planes, and it even looks nice standing up on a corner in a tripod stand.

This is typical of a 1950s – 60s Atomic Age ‘Mid Century Modern’ sculpture or light fixture.      9″ square, 48 pieces / Cherry, Walnut, Ebony wood stain or just Clear Polyurethane (shown).
